Fable Protected From Xbox Layoffs Because It Is Vital to Platform DNA

Playground Games co-founder Ralph Fulton explains how Fable survived recent Xbox layoffs and a lengthy development cycle.

Playground Games has emerged unscathed from recent mass layoffs at Xbox despite changes affecting other developers and contractors. According to Playground Games co-founder and game director Ralph Fulton, the upcoming Fable title was shielded from potential cancellations because many people within Xbox view the franchise as vital to the platform.

In an interview with The Guardian, Fulton noted that Fable has been in development since 2016 and will reach nearly eleven years of production time by launch. Fulton stated that Fable is an important game that contributes to video games as a whole by offering a distinct combination of elements. The long development cycle has also faced various rumors regarding production troubles and potential budgets.

Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. The game features elements such as one thousand hand-crafted NPCs with full voice acting and a system allowing players to build multiple reputations across the world.
