Fable Handcrafts Every NPC Instead of Using Randomizer
Playground Games designed all NPCs individually for Fable, rejecting a randomization tool to ensure each character's job, appearance, and personality feel cohesive and believable.

Playground Games has opted to handcraft every NPC in the upcoming Fable rather than rely on procedural generation, according to director Ralph Fulton. The decision prioritizes character believability over development efficiency, despite the significant labor investment required.
In an interview with Games Radar+, Fulton explained that the studio originally developed a randomization tool capable of generating NPCs with varied traits and appearances. However, testing revealed that randomly generated characters often lacked internal consistency—their jobs, looks, and personalities frequently clashed, making them feel less authentic to the world of Albion.
"We individually picked everything about every NPC to make it into an NPC that you could read, that made sense top to bottom," Fulton said. "We originally had a tool that would randomize it, and just 'roll' an NPC, and that would have been a massive labor-saving device. That would have saved us so much time, but what we found was, they just didn't make as much sense."
The scope of this undertaking is substantial. Bowerstone alone, a single settlement within the game world, contains approximately 400 individually designed NPCs. This meticulous approach contrasts with common industry practice, where randomization tools frequently reduce development time on character creation.
Fable is scheduled to release in 2027 and will mark the first title in the franchise to launch on PlayStation consoles alongside Xbox platforms. Recent reports have suggested the project operates under budget constraints, though Playground Games' commitment to handcrafted character design demonstrates the studio's prioritization of world-building quality.
