Fable Combat System Aims to Balance Depth and Approachability

Playground Games discusses how the upcoming Fable will feature a modern style-weaving combat system while staying true to the classic franchise.

Playground Games is aiming to balance deep mechanics with classic approachability for the upcoming Fable title. Associate game director Will Kennedy spoke about the combat system during a trade fair Q&A session attended by TechRadar, explaining that the team wanted to stay faithful to the original franchise while updating the gameplay for modern players.

Kennedy described the design as style-weaving combat, which allows players to move smoothly between attacks while utilizing different level expressions. The developer is providing complete freedom for loadouts, offering a broad, deep, and rich suite of options early on. Footage has shown players wielding weapons like a sword and shield, a two-handed hammer, and a rapid-fire crossbow. Spells demonstrated so far range from throwing fireballs and psychic daggers to transforming enemies into chickens.

While earlier gameplay impressions and quest-driven demonstrations drew mixed reactions regarding responsiveness and polish, dedicated combat demos have highlighted various weapon types and spells. Kennedy stated that the team is proud of the current state of the game, noting that it feels satisfying and achieves the desired depth without losing its welcoming nature.

Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027. The game will be available for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
