Electronic Arts has confirmed that it is using generative AI voice technology in the upcoming sports title NHL 27. The publisher stated that using the technology will bring more variety to the game and allow the development team to react more quickly to league changes and player feedback.
The use of generative AI in the title was first mentioned by ESPN sportscaster John Buccigross, who provides play-by-play commentary for the EA series. Buccigross spoke about the technology on the Chirping Zebras Podcast, noting that he had heard samples of his own AI-generated voice. EA later addressed the discussion in a blog post accompanying the game's first update, clarifying that the broadcast remains built on an ongoing partnership with Buccigross and color commentator Darren Pang. According to EA, the AI voices are being utilized with the full consent and active collaboration of the commentators to expand upon more than fifty recording sessions they have already completed.
Update 1 marks the first step in the publisher's commitment to improving authenticity by addressing player-name pronunciations and repetitive lines. EA stated that future updates will continue to expand player and city-name coverage. During his podcast appearance, Buccigross highlighted some early hurdles with the technology, recalling an instance where the AI generated unnatural terminology that required manual correction because specific word choices matter in sports broadcasting.
EA has maintained a proactive stance regarding artificial intelligence. Laura Miele, EA president of enterprise development, stated earlier this year that AI has enabled a rise in creativity at the company. The publisher's latest statement reflects this outlook, focusing on the virtues of the technology and active collaboration with talent rather than offering an apology for its inclusion.
