Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls Archived on Internet Archive Following Official Shutdown
Following its recent shutdown by Konami, Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls has been fully archived for offline play by a modder.
Following last week's official shutdown of Konami's mobile action title Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls, the game has been successfully preserved in an offline format by modder "WonderThunder". The mobile adventure officially ended its run on September 3, 2026, after six years of operation, but fans of the franchise will still be able to experience the title through archival efforts hosted on The Internet Archive.
Originally released in September 2019 exclusively in Canadian territories for iOS and Android platforms, the title was initially designed as a gacha game featuring microtransactions and currency conversion. After an initial closure following a year of service, Grimoire of Souls returned globally in the summer of 2021 on mobile platforms and Apple Arcade, stripped of its gacha mechanics and real-world currency elements. The narrative follows Genya Arikado, who enters a library recording the universe's events to exorcise dark powers, visiting past and future events of the franchise with characters like Simon Belmont, Trevor Belmont, Soma Cruz, Maria Renard, and Shanoa to prevent the resurrection of Dracula.
The newly created offline archival version, uploaded by WonderThunder, is currently available exclusively for macOS. However, the modder has indicated that Windows, iOS, and potentially Android versions could be released in the future. This preservation effort highlights the ongoing importance of game preservation in an era heavily focused on live-service frameworks and online-only software models.
