Armed Fantasia, Wild Arms Spiritual Successor, Cancelled After Four Years in Development

Publisher 505 Games has cancelled Armed Fantasia, the Kickstarter-funded JRPG spiritual successor to the classic Wild Arms series. The project, led by former Wild Arms developers, was pulled after multiple failed attempts to revise gameplay.

Armed Fantasia: To the End of the Wilderness has been officially cancelled. Publisher 505 Games and its parent company Digital Bros announced the decision in a financial report, stating the project was discontinued "after multiple attempts to revise their gameplay."

The game was announced via Kickstarter in 2022 as a spiritual successor to Wild Arms, the classic Japanese RPG series. The campaign was spearheaded by former Wild Arms creators and raised approximately $2.5 million, surpassing its original $750,000 funding goal in a single day. The Kickstarter also funded a companion project, the RPG Penny Blood.

505 Games took on publishing duties following the Kickstarter campaign, but development failed to progress sufficiently. In a 2022 interview, former Wild Arms designer Akifumi Kaneko revealed that Armed Fantasia had been pitched to Sony multiple times, but the platform holder declined to publish the title.

Armed Fantasia was planned for Nintendo platforms, though it remained unclear whether the game would release on Nintendo Switch or its upcoming successor. Given the aging hardware, a Switch 2 release would have been more likely had the project continued.

The cancellation affects Kickstarter backers, who have not yet received updates about their pledges. Digital Bros also discontinued two other projects: the strategy game Directorate: Novitiate and a sequel to the free-to-play title Battle Island. The company reported a non-cash asset impairment charge of €18.7 million, including €17.6 million in write-offs related to the cancelled games.
