Arcturus Vision Camera Transforms Steam Frame Passthrough From Dim to Crisp
The $150 add-on module brings Steam Frame's passthrough view from monotone and low-res to color and readable clarity, matching Quest 3 while enabling spatial video capture at up to 6MP and 60 FPS.

Arcturus Vision Camera, a plug-and-play add-on for Steam Frame, significantly improves the headset's passthrough camera quality through a small module that snaps into Frame's expansion port under the nose bridge.
The module instantly activates without requiring a headset restart. It replaces Steam Frame's default passthrough view in all locations, from the SteamVR dashboard to mixed reality games. The visual jump is immediate. Frame's stock passthrough is monotone and low-resolution, making it impossible to read a phone screen. The Arcturus module adds full color and enough resolution to read text on a phone display.
According to the review from Road to VR, the improvement feels like "sitting in the dark and then someone flipped on the lights." While the upgrade brings Frame's passthrough to approximate parity with Meta Quest 3, both remain behind Apple Vision Pro in passthrough quality. The module itself weighs just 10 grams and costs $150.
Beyond passthrough improvement, the Arcturus Vision Camera can capture spatial videos at up to 6MP at 60 FPS, or 120 FPS at 1.5MP resolution, with 10-bit HDR support. It captures the widest field-of-view available among major headsets that support spatial video recording. Playback on Frame or other headsets includes synchronized head movement, allowing viewers to follow video frames with their gaze rather than watching a shaking frame inside a static window.
Arcturus provides a free companion app for Steam Frame to enable spatial video playback and a separate Sync app for Windows and Mac (with Linux planned) to transfer and convert recordings for viewing on other headsets. The company also supports 3D gaussian splat capture, though that currently requires command-line tools and a Linux desktop with an NVIDIA GPU.
The reviewer found the camera straightforward to recommend, noting that in over a decade of VR accessory use, few have been as obviously useful. The combination of small size, reasonable price, plug-and-play installation, and seamless integration makes the upgrade a natural choice for Steam Frame owners.
