Airbus has found an unconventional use for the Steam Deck: controlling a Mars rover prototype. The aerospace company's Stevenage campus in the UK uses a modified Steam Deck running custom software to remotely operate its ExoMars rover during testing.

The handheld gaming PC serves as the physical interface for operators to steer the rover across test terrain. A bumper press controls the wheels, turning them 90 degrees to avoid awkward turning circles that could leave the rover stuck on obstacles. The rover is driven forward via the Steam Deck's controls, according to a recent documentary featuring the setup.

Airbus Defence and Space UK managing director Kata Escott described the ExoMars project as "the culmination of more than 20 years' work." The company aims to send its Rosalind Franklin rover to Mars in 2030.

The team at Airbus is developing autonomous navigation systems for the rover, alongside its mechanical, thermal and propulsion systems. While the Steam Deck serves as a useful prototyping tool during development, the rover will operate autonomously once it lands on Mars and won't require remote control from Earth.

The repurposing of consumer gaming hardware highlights how flexible and intuitive existing devices can be for specialized applications. Though Valve's handheld won't make the journey to the Red Planet, it played a practical role in getting the mission closer to launch.
