Six years ago this week, Microsoft experienced what many considered the most frustrating hardware leak in its history. While the existence of the Xbox Series X had been known for quite some time, rumors had circulated about a smaller, all-digital companion console codenamed Lockhart. That console eventually became the Xbox Series S, which was slated for a November release following an official unveiling.

The intended rollout did not go according to plan. On the morning of September 8, 2020, numerous images of the Xbox Series S suddenly flooded social media platforms. The unexpected wave of photographs forced Microsoft to react quickly, pushing the company to issue an official reveal a few hours ahead of schedule. Consequently, an entire press briefing prepared for the announcement was ultimately discarded.

The premature exposure drew strong reactions from internal staff. Xbox Insider Program Lead Brad Rossetti publicly described the situation as very frustrating, noting that many people had worked hard to keep the hardware under wraps. Xbox executive Cindy Walker went further, denouncing the incident as theft rather than a standard leak, explaining that the unapproved dissemination of work, time, and effort felt akin to having an intricate painting stolen and chopped into pieces.

Despite the turbulent unveiling, the console went on to launch on November 10, 2020, at a price point of £249.99 and $299.99. Marketed as an all-digital system offering faster load times, higher frame rates, and next-generation performance in the smallest Xbox form factor yet, it became a major part of the hardware generation. While Microsoft later faced another massive document leak in 2023 tied to an FTC investigation surrounding the Activision Blizzard acquisition, the surprise social media exposure of the Series S remains a striking moment in recent console history.
