Xbox Cloud Gaming Introduces Monthly Hour Limits and Standalone Playtime Purchases

Microsoft has announced upcoming changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming, introducing monthly hour limits for Game Pass subscribers and a new standalone playtime purchasing option beginning in November.

Microsoft has announced upcoming updates to Xbox Cloud Gaming, shifting the service to include a set number of cloud gaming hours each month for Xbox Game Pass subscribers beginning in November. Under the new structure, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will receive 15 hours of cloud gaming per month, Game Pass Premium subscribers will get 10 hours, and Game Pass Essential subscribers will have access to 5 hours. Currently, eligible subscribers can stream without any monthly hour limits.

According to the announcement, the changes are expected to impact approximately four percent of Game Pass subscribers. Once players exhaust their monthly allotment of included hours, they will have the option to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. The availability of hours, purchasing options, and specific features may vary depending on the market, and further pricing details will be shared prior to the implementation of the changes.

Additionally, November will introduce a new option for players to use Xbox Cloud Gaming without requiring a Game Pass subscription. Users will be able to buy cloud playtime hours directly from the Xbox Store to stream eligible games they already own on supported devices. This alternative is designed for occasional users or those who prefer to avoid a recurring subscription. It also provides Xbox One owners with a way to access eligible games built for Xbox Series X|S without needing to upgrade their hardware immediately.

Microsoft stated that the adjustments are necessary due to the rising costs of providing cloud gaming as usage and play times increase. The new model aims to sustain the service while allowing continued investment in performance and reliability. More information regarding pricing, eligible games, and methods for tracking remaining hours will be released in November.
