CD Projekt Red Confirms The Witcher 4 Target Release Window of 2028
CD Projekt Red has announced that The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release, while also confirming a Gamescom presence for The Witcher 3's upcoming Songs of the Past expansion.
CD Projekt Red has officially narrowed down the launch timing for the highly anticipated next entry in its flagship fantasy franchise. In an announcement video shared by joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski, the developer confirmed that the upcoming title, currently known as The Witcher 4, is targeting a release window of 2028.
According to Nowakowski, the Ciri-centered game is being developed by a team of more than 500 people. Described as the studio's "biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date," the project is set to feature a massive, immersive open world paired with action-packed gameplay and a deep, impactful story. Addressing the wait ahead for players, Nowakowski remarked, "I know it's a bit of a wait, and you'd love to play it sooner—but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait." As the 2028 date is a target window, there remains the potential for delays, similar to those experienced by the studio's prior major releases, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077.
The upcoming title is planned to kick off a brand-new trilogy that will also encompass The Witcher 5 and The Witcher 6. CD Projekt Red plans to release all three entries within a six-year window, meaning the entire trilogy could be completed by 2034.
While The Witcher 4 will not have a presence at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, the developer is shifting its immediate focus to other projects at the trade show. The studio will have a prominent physical presence in hall eight, alongside an appearance during Gamescom Opening Night Live, to highlight the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Originally announced to arrive sometime in 2027, the expansion's story and content will be showcased through upcoming livestreams, including dedicated REDStreams. Nowakowski also teased that the team has "a surprise or two to share" during these planned Gamescom broadcasts.
Beyond The Witcher 4 and the upcoming The Witcher 3 expansion, CD Projekt Red is actively working on several other projects. These include a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, a multiplayer-focused game set in The Witcher universe, and a separate project in partnership with Scopely.
