The Witcher 4 Targeting 2028 Release, CD Projekt Red Confirms

CD Projekt Red has officially narrowed down the launch window for its highly anticipated RPG sequel, The Witcher 4. In a video update posted to the official Witcher social media accounts ahead of Gamescom, CD Projekt Red joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed that the studio is targeting a 2028 release date for the project.

While The Witcher 4 will not be playable on the show floor or present during Gamescom's Opening Night Live, Nowakowski shared the target window to address fans' anticipation. "While we're not showing the Witcher 4 at the event, and we're not ready to share an exact date, I can tell you this: The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window," Nowakowski said. "I know it's a bit of a wait, and you'd love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait."

Nowakowski described the sequel as the studio's "biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date," noting that there are more than 500 developers currently hard at work on the game. The Witcher 4, which was first shown off at The Game Awards 2024, is set to feature a massive, immersive open world, intense action-packed gameplay, and a deep, impactful story. It will star Ciri, Geralt's daughter, who has grown into a seasoned Witcher in her own right, starting a brand-new saga for the franchise.

While the next mainline entry remains years away, CD Projekt Red's current Gamescom presence will center around The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past. This unexpected upcoming DLC expansion for the nearly decade-old title is scheduled to be shown during Opening Night Live, as confirmed by host Geoff Keighley, and will also be showcased at the developer's Gamescom booth.

The Songs of the Past expansion is being developed by a team size comparable to, or potentially even larger than, the team that originally made The Witcher 3. Unlike the fourth game, this expansion stars Geralt of Rivia rather than Ciri. The DLC will introduce a dark story and an entirely new continent, and it is expected to help link the mainline entries of the franchise together. CD Projekt Red has also teased "one or two surprises" planned elsewhere for the upcoming trade show.
