Supercell's Acquisition of Merge Mansion Developer Metacore Expected to Close This Month

Supercell has signed a deal to acquire Metacore, the developer behind Merge Mansion, with the transaction expected to be completed at the end of September.

Supercell, the mobile game company known for titles such as Clash Royale and Brawl Stars, has signed a deal to acquire Merge Mansion developer Metacore. Once the transaction is officially closed, which is expected to happen at the end of September, Merge Mansion will become part of Supercell's live games portfolio.

The acquisition represents the latest example of major restructurings within the mobile gaming space. Metacore previously underwent a restructuring period in May ahead of the acquisition decision. According to comments provided by Metacore at the time, the restructuring and subsequent acquisition by Supercell aims to better align with the core business, improve operational efficiency, and respond to an increasingly competitive market environment. These changes arrived during a period where Merge Mansion's growth had plateaued over the past few years following its 2020 launch, and as new investments failed to launch new games globally.

Both companies are currently working to plan the transition of the game. Metacore CEO Mika Tammenkoski expressed enthusiasm for the next phase in the announcement, noting that Supercell's expertise in operating and growing global live games provides Merge Mansion with a strong foundation for long-term success.

Metacore's restructuring in May also involved initiating change negotiations in Finland due to uncertainty surrounding the future of Merge Mansion, with considerations to reduce up to 160 roles in the country alongside investigations into operations in Germany and Sweden. However, those specific plans were not mentioned in the latest deal announcement, and the financial terms of the transaction remain undisclosed.

Supercell, which operates under the Tencent umbrella, has spent recent years acquiring studios and buying majority stakes. The parent company previously ended development on two of its projects, Clash Quest and Everdale, in 2022.
