SEGA has pulled back the curtain on the full cast of STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, the sprawling action game launching January 15, 2027, on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud. The game follows Makoto Daito across a 50-year journey through five Japanese cities, from 1915 to 1965.
Makoto Daito, portrayed by Yu Shirota, is a half-Japanese half-American man who faces severe persecution in America before stowing away aboard a ship bound for Japan. Born to an American father and Japanese mother, he belongs fully to neither country. His voyage becomes a turning point when he meets two figures who will shape his fate: Orpheus, a globe-trotting merchant played by Snoop Dogg, and Yu Shinjo, a half-Japanese half-British man portrayed by Dean Fujioka. Shinjo, like Daito, seeks escape from discrimination and decides to stick with Daito to survive in Japan.
Snoop Dogg's character Orpheus operates under a pragmatic philosophy. "Taking what's meant to be where it's meant to be. That's our motto," the character states. After discovering Daito stowed away, Orpheus teaches him harsh realities while recognizing his natural talent for music.
The cast expands across the game's five eras with characters who cross paths with Daito. Tae Matsumoto, a café waitress and yakuza's mistress in Kokura, is portrayed by Moeka Hoshi. Suzy Day, a talented singer with dreams of making it big, is played by Tori Kelly. The character says, "Well, all right. That sounds like a challenge" after meeting Daito, beginning her rise through show business.
Additional key figures include Heigo Yashima, a merchant and boss in Kokura played by Akio Otsuka, and Kiyoshi Otsuru, a stylish elder with unmistakable authority, portrayed by Tokuma Nishioka. Takashi, Daito's sworn brother and gifted pianist played by Satoshi Fujihara, rekindles his passion for music when witnessing Daito's gift.
SEGA has incorporated a CG recreation of the late actor Bunta Sugawara as Genzo Iwaki, the big boss of Kure with unmatched influence. SEGA received formal consent from Sugawara's family and worked with Toei Company, Ltd., which produced many of his films including the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series. The character design was crafted based on archival footage and photographs. Actor Takashi Ukaji, who shared a close connection with Sugawara, performs the character's voice.
The game also features a character named Amaru, portrayed using a special integration involving Tupac's estate. Amaru Entertainment has granted permission and provides ongoing supervision for this portrayal. RGG Studio states it is treating this integration with utmost respect for Tupac's legacy, crafting every aspect in close collaboration without the use of AI. The character design is based on archival footage and photographs, with more details about his role to be shared later.
The Veiled Stranger, a man stationed in postwar Japan, is played by Cordell Broadus. Keiko Shirai, the diva of wartime Osaka, is portrayed by Ado. Additional characters include Tadashi Hataoka, a swaggering yakuza from Kokura played by Takashi Ukaji, and Takeo Godai, a skilled craftsman of few words portrayed by Takaya Kuroda.
The game unfolds across five sprawling cities modeled after real locations. The story begins in 1915 Kokura, Fukuoka, a smoke-scorched town built around one of the world's largest foundries. It progresses to 1929 Kure, Hiroshima, a port town dominated by Japan's largest naval arsenal and yakuza influence. The 1943 segment takes place in Minami, Osaka, the biggest entertainment district in western Japan, set against rising wartime tension. The 1951 era features Atami, Shizuoka, a bustling seaside resort. The final chapter is set in 1965 Shinjuku, Tokyo, described as Japan's most iconic pleasure district.
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN launches January 15, 2027, and will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud. The game is an Xbox Play Anywhere title and will be available with Xbox Game Pass.
