Sonic Blitz Cancelled as Mobile Card Game Servers Shut Down

Sega and Rovio have officially cancelled the mobile card game Sonic Blitz, shutting down its servers and closing its Discord and Twitter accounts. The decision was announced to the community on August 21st, with servers officially going offline on August 24th. According to the studio, the discontinuation is part of "broader changes" at Rovio and means the game will not progress past its regional soft launch phase.

Originally soft launched in the Philippines in June 2025 and later released in Brazil, Sonic Blitz spent over a year in regional testing without ever achieving a global launch. Designed as a celebration of the Sonic the Hedgehog legacy, the title allowed players in soft launch territories to build teams featuring 12 cards from characters across the franchise. AppMagic estimates indicate the game accumulated over 200,000 downloads between Brazil and the Philippines, hitting a peak of 47,000 installs in July. Although monthly installs stayed above 10,000 through the remainder of 2025 and saw a spike to 32,000 in June 2026, developers ultimately decided to halt development.

Rovio clarified in its closure announcement that the cancellation did not reflect the team's effort or community support. Meanwhile, Sega's other mobile venture, Sonic Rumble, experienced a similarly lengthy soft launch period before securing a global release after several delays, though it later underwent a rebrand to Sonic Rumble Party following financial performance reviews.
