Sega Cancelled Risky Super Game Project Due to Service Scale and Investment Demands
Sega president and COO Shuji Utsumi revealed that the company halted its massive "Super Game" initiative because the scale of investment and operations grew too risky to pursue.
Sega has cancelled its ambitious live-service "Super Game" initiative after concluding that the project had become too risky. Originally announced in 2021, the initiative was envisioned as an online AAA global hit that would go beyond traditional game frameworks, with Sega indicating at the time that it might invest nearly $1 billion into internal development and acquisitions to make it a reality.
Speaking in an interview with Nikkei (via VGC), Sega president and COO Shuji Utsumi explained that as the company analyzed the project, it became clear that the scale of investment and operations would need to grow enormously to match the requirements of the service. Taking the global environment into consideration, Sega ultimately determined that taking on the challenge at this time presented too much risk, leading to the decision to halt development on the Super Game project.
Despite this cancellation, Utsumi emphasized that Sega still views Games as a Service (GaaS) as an essential area of focus. "Within the gaming industry, Games as a Service is an area we simply cannot ignore," Utsumi stated. "If we can successfully roll out an IP we created from scratch on a large scale globally, the rewards would be immense." He added that he believes there is still a business opportunity in this sector, which Sega will continue to pursue.
Sega currently maintains several live-service operations, including Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis and Sega Football Club Champions 2026. Additionally, Utsumi noted that Creative Assembly's Total War: Warhammer 40,000, which will enter closed beta testing this year, is expected to follow a Games as a Service model that continuously expands after launch. The decision to halt the Super Game project follows other live-service setbacks for the company, including the 2023 cancellation of Creative Assembly's shooter Hyenas amid structural reforms and a rapidly changing business environment.
