Pokemon Champions adds three Z-Mega Evolutions from Legends: Z-A on September 9
Mega Absol Z, Mega Lucario Z, and Mega Garchomp Z arrive in Pokemon Champions with competitive analysis of their stats, abilities, and metagame potential.

Pokemon Champions is receiving three Z-Mega Evolutions from Pokemon Legends: Z-A on September 9. All three share exceptional speed, with base 151 Speed stats that make them among the fastest Pokemon currently available in the game.
Mega Absol Z stands out as the most immediately threatening of the trio. It combines its 151 Speed with a base 154 Attack stat and the ability Sharpness, which grants a 50% power boost to slicing moves. This makes its Shadow Claw, Night Slash, and Psycho Cut devastating in singles play. The Dark/Ghost typing provides immunity to Mach Punch and allows Sucker Punch to function as a reliable priority option. However, Absol remains extremely frail even when Mega Evolved, making it vulnerable to priority moves. In doubles format, its lack of multi-target moves benefiting from Sharpness and increased exposure to two opponents limit its effectiveness, requiring careful Protect play to maximize its potential.
Mega Lucario Z pairs its shared 151 Speed with a base 164 Special Attack stat and the ability Aura Guard, which halves damage from contact moves. While this defensive capability allows Lucario to survive certain attacks like Basculegion's Water-type moves in rain, it still takes significant damage from common threats like Garchomp's Earthquake. Lucario's special move pool includes Aura Sphere, Dragon Pulse, Flash Cannon, Psychic, Shadow Ball, Steel Beam, Vacuum Wave, and Water Pulse, along with Rock Slide for physical coverage. In singles, it shows potential as a fast special attacker with favorable matchups against certain Mega Evolutions, though it struggles against Garchomp. In doubles, Lucario faces difficulties against Rillaboom and Grassy Seed Sneasler teams, where Sneasler's Close Combat bypasses its Aura Guard ability.
Mega Garchomp Z faces the most significant challenge justifying its use. While it retains its base form's 130 Attack and gains a new base 141 Special Attack alongside 151 Speed, it loses its Ground typing—eliminating both its weakness to Ice and the power boost to Earthquake and High Horsepower. Its Levitate ability grants immunity to Ground-type moves, a defensive property Garchomp rarely needs. Garchomp's movepool includes Draco Meteor, Dragon Claw, Earth Power, Earthquake, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Iron Head, and Surf, with unboosted Rock Slide achieving a one-hit KO on Mega Charizard Y. However, lacking Nasty Plot limits special attack setup options, and its Attack stat mirrors its base form, making the regular Garchomp with a Life Orb a more compelling choice for trainers seeking raw damage output.
