Microsoft Weighs Performance Against Price Ahead of the Helix Launch

Microsoft is currently weighing performance against price as it prepares for the launch of its next-generation console, known as Project Helix. While rumors have long suggested that the upcoming Xbox will boast incredible power, rising hardware costs have forced the company to carefully consider what consumers will be able to afford.

In a recent interview with the BBC, Xbox head Asha Sharma addressed the issue directly. Sharma, who stepped into the role in February, acknowledged the delicate balance required for the next generation of hardware. "This next generation, we have to be thinking about efficiency and affordability alongside performance," Sharma stated.

Another open question surrounding Project Helix is whether the console will feature a disc drive. Omitting a disc drive would keep the console smaller and less expensive, but Sony recently faced massive backlash for phasing out physical games. Furthermore, Microsoft recently launched a program allowing users to digitize their existing Xbox discs, a feature that inherently requires a drive.

Addressing player preference, Sharma noted that while digital media offers clear benefits, many players still love physical media and have stacks of games on their shelves. Sharma emphasized a desire to ensure players have a choice, though stopped short of confirming whether Project Helix will ultimately include a physical disc drive.
