Meta's Muse AI mascot Jolly sparks strong reactions over design choices
Meta unveiled Jolly, the default mascot for its new Muse AI assistant, at Connect 2026. The fluffy character's design has drawn criticism for its mass-market appeal targeting, even as marketing experts debate whether cuteness helps make AI more

Meta introduced Jolly, the mascot for its Muse AI assistant, at the Meta Connect conference last week. The fluffy character will be the default face of Muse, though users can customize their own avatars. Alongside the mascot, Meta revealed the Muse Charm, a Tamagotchi-like device that will house the assistant.
According to Meta, Muse aims to be "an AI assistant that you can talk to in real time and reach in more places throughout your day." CEO Mark Zuckerberg named the mascot Jolly for its "jolly and completely customizable character and personality."
The mascot's design has drawn critical commentary on its approach to broad appeal. The rounded edges, fur texture, and blank pleasant expression reflect a deliberate targeting of mass-market audiences. Andrew Tindall, chief growth officer at System 1, told Business Insider that Meta is leveraging "our innate draw to cute, infant-like features, to make surprising new technology easier to accept."
Marketing perspectives differ on the strategy. Avery Akkineni, CMO at VaynerX, suggested to Business Insider that "in some ways, it does humanize the product a little bit," and noted Meta's likely intention to reach beyond early adopters.
Efforts to personify AI technology through mascots are established practice in the industry. Some observers have compared Jolly's design to collectible toys like Labubu, raising questions about the gap between Muse's positioning as an adult-focused tool and its toy-like appearance. The mascot design reflects broader industry trends of adding human-like elements to machine learning products, though reactions to Meta's execution have been decidedly mixed.
