Hands-On With NHL 27 Highlights Presentation Overhauls and Connected Franchise Return
An early hands-on report with NHL 27 highlights significant presentation upgrades, licensed goal songs, and the return of Connected Franchise.
Early hands-on reports indicate that NHL 27 is shaping up to be a strong entry in EA Sports' long-running hockey franchise, introducing key focus areas such as an overhauled presentation suite and the return of Connected Franchise. Because the series operates on a smaller budget compared to titles like EA Sports FC and Madden, developers typically concentrate on one or two key features per release while keeping other elements largely consistent with previous years.
Among the most prominent additions in NHL 27 are major presentation improvements designed to increase immersion. These updates feature new pre-game introductions, replays, close-up crowd reactions, and a refreshing commentary team. Furthermore, developers have incorporated specific elements unique to each NHL arena alongside licensed official goal songs and hype tracks, such as Zombie Nation's "Kernkraft 400," Kiss' "Rock And Roll All Nite," The Fratellis' "Chelsea Dagger," and Blur's "Song 2." These tracks play during menus, team-specific goal celebrations, and mid-game cutscenes where jumbotrons flash prompts like "Make Some Noise!" EA Sports has indicated that official jumbotron graphics for various teams will also be added over time.
On the gameplay side, NHL 27 introduces features like "Contextual Strategy Shifts," which prompt players or AI opponents to alter strategies with a single button press when suggested by the coach. New team Playbooks have also been added to encourage more authentic tactical playing styles, though some traditional modes like Franchise Mode and Ultimate Team remain largely identical to last year. While pre-release code showed minor bugs and occasional unrealistic goals or offensive plays, the overall gameplay on Superstar difficulty feels competitive, varied, and balanced.
The title also marks the return of Connected Franchise, an online franchise mode supporting human players exclusively, for the first time since the Xbox 360 era. NHL 27 is scheduled for an early access release on September 4th, followed by a full launch for all players on September 11th.
