GTA 6 Romance System Is Entirely Optional, Rockstar Says

Rockstar's Rob Nelson has confirmed that the romance mechanics between protagonists Jason and Lucia in Grand Theft Auto 6 are completely optional for players.

Players who are not interested in the romance mechanics featuring protagonists Jason and Lucia in Grand Theft Auto 6 can simply choose not to use them, according to Rockstar's Rob Nelson. In a recent interview, Nelson explained that while players can choose to grow and nurture a romantic relationship between the two characters—such as by holding hands, visiting a zoo, or taking a romantic stroll on the beach—those who opt out are not forced to participate.

Nelson noted that while the optional system adds a compelling element to the experience, players who ignore it might miss out on other aspects of the narrative. The story takes structural cues from the famous early 1900s outlaws Bonnie and Clyde. To manage the relationship successfully, players will need to respond to text messages and make an effort in how they treat their partner, alongside managing their actions and level of violence.

According to Nelson, the developers had to feel their way through the new dynamic, which was not originally envisioned when production started. Playing as Jason and Lucia together creates a unique feeling of taking care of them as a unit while running from the cops or getting into trouble. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
