Grand Theft Auto 6 Co-Studio Head Details Fast Refueling and Rebuilt Driving Physics
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson discussed Grand Theft Auto 6 features in a recent interview, noting that vehicle refueling will be quick and driving physics will blend elements of GTA 4 and GTA 5.
In a recent interview with YouTube channel TGG, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson shed light on several realism-focused gameplay features coming to Grand Theft Auto 6. Among the highlighted systems is a vehicle refueling mechanic. While the inclusion of fuel requirements marks a step toward increased realism compared to previous titles, Nelson noted that the process is designed to be quick enough that it will not become annoying for players. Upon completing a refueling animation during a demonstration, Nelson remarked that the fill-up speed was fast enough that players would not be able to complain.
Nelson also discussed how the driving mechanics have been rebuilt from scratch for current hardware, aiming to strike a balance between the heavier, more deliberate driving feel of Grand Theft Auto 4 and the accessible, high-speed arcade style of Grand Theft Auto 5. The physics model gives the development team deeper control over tuning components such as tires, suspension, steering, and drivetrains. According to Nelson, top speeds for fast vehicles will exceed those found in GTA 5, while powerful rear-wheel-drive cars and muscle cars will require players to exercise more caution with the throttle.
Additionally, the demonstration pointed out that Grand Theft Auto 6 is set in the modern day and will feature numerous electric vehicles for players to steal, though details regarding how charging compares to traditional refueling were not disclosed. The interview also touched on dynamic sandbox elements, such as car fences with specific vehicle request lists and encounters where non-player characters may react to the player. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19th.
