Gamescom Wants Responsible Expansion After Record-Breaking Year in Cologne
Gamescom managing director Felix Falk discusses the expo's record-breaking numbers in Cologne and why future global expansion must remain organic, local, and relevant rather than rapid.
Organizers behind Gamescom are emphasizing a measured and responsible approach to future global expansion following a record-breaking year for the long-running video game conference. Speaking on the eve of the showcase at the Koelnmesse exhibition center in Cologne, Germany, managing director Felix Falk outlined the strategy for the event, which now spans three global editions including Gamescom Latam in São Paulo and Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show in Bangkok.
According to co-organizer Game, the German video game industry association, Gamescom 2026 reached monumental milestones by attracting over 1,600 exhibitors from 67 countries across 233,000 square meters of gross exhibition space. The indie sector also saw a notable surge, expanding by 16 percent compared to 2025 and welcoming hundreds of games from more than 420 companies. Despite this massive growth, Falk stressed that the organization does not intend to plant its flag in new regions indiscriminately.
"We do not expand Gamescom just to put the name in more places," Falk stated. "Each event has to feel local and relevant to its market, but still clearly part of the Gamescom family." Falk explained that regional editions are designed to make the platform more accessible, maintain year-round visibility, and build local partnerships while keeping Cologne as the core center of the global operation. The immediate focus remains on strengthening existing events in Germany, Latin America, and Southeast Asia rather than rapidly adding new international locations.
Amid an industry climate marked by consolidation, mass layoffs, financing struggles, and rising production costs, Falk highlighted the enduring importance of in-person gatherings. While digital communication remains efficient, events allow developers to secure immediate feedback, build momentum, and spark spontaneous business opportunities. Alongside major industry mainstays like Tencent, Google, and Xsolla returning to the newly-rebranded Gamescom Dev event in the Confex hangar, organizers continue to champion independent creators. Support mechanisms like the indie area, the gamescom awesome indies show, the gamescom steam event, and the gamescom invest circle aim to connect young studios with publishers, international investors, and strategic partners through discounted participation and dedicated networking tools.
