Epic Games has filed a fresh trademark for Megaverse, despite losing a legal battle over the same word in Europe. The move suggests the company is willing to risk another costly dispute to secure the name for its metaverse ventures.

In 2022, Epic Games first trademarked Epic Games Megaverse across six classifications covering digital goods and services. Megaverse Ltd., which already owned the Megaverse trademark for similar purposes, opposed the filing in 2023. The opposition succeeded in 2025, forcing Epic Games to abandon most of its original classes and retain only two.

The European authorities ruled that adding Epic Games to the trademark did not make it sufficiently distinct. The company's name alone, they found, did not create meaningful separation in consumers' minds from the product itself. Epic Games was ordered to pay £700 in official costs to the opposition.

The company's new filing is notably more direct. It targets classes 09, 38, 41, and 42, with significant overlap to Megaverse Ltd.'s existing trademark, particularly in class 09. Industry observers note the filing appears to invite another challenge from the same opposition.

The earlier legal battle unfolded in Europe, which is why Epic Games's original trademark remains active in the United States. The new filing has not yet appeared on the USPTO and is unlikely to do so, suggesting the company is focusing on European markets despite the known risks. If Epic Games faces another opposition without a stronger legal argument, the new Megaverse trademark could be partially or completely blocked, potentially incurring further costs and delays.
