Discord rolls out updated age verification system using account signals instead of mandatory biometrics
Discord has launched a redesigned age assurance system that sorts users into teen, adult, and unconfirmed categories while relying primarily on account-level data rather than facial recognition. Over 90 percent of users will avoid biometric checks

Discord has launched an updated age verification system designed to balance safety with user privacy, moving away from the mandatory biometric checks that sparked backlash in February 2026.
The new system, announced by Discord co-founder and chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy on September 22, classifies all users into one of three categories: teen, adult, or unconfirmed. Adult users will see no changes to their experience, while teens and unconfirmed users gain additional protections including limited profile visibility, extra confirmation steps for friend requests, and filtering of sensitive images and age-restricted servers and channels.
The system prioritizes account-level signals such as account history, activity patterns, and connected games and communities. According to a Discord representative, over 90 percent of users will not be asked to confirm their age through biometric data submission.
When biometric verification is necessary, Discord has made changes to address privacy concerns from the failed February rollout. Age estimation using facial images now occurs entirely on users' devices, preventing biometric data from reaching Discord or third-party partners like k-ID. Discord is also publicly documenting which age assurance vendors it uses.
"By and large, even if you're classified as a teen, you can keep using Discord the way you want," Vishnevskiy said in an interview. "You never have to provide Discord any extra information, and that is our goal."
The global rollout began September 22 and will continue over the coming week, with some regional variations in settings and methods. The new system will also change how age-verified comment tags function on the platform. These tags had been informally adapted by communities as spoiler markers. Discord is replacing this with dedicated spoiler channels to allow discussions of sensitive topics including spoilers and politics without requiring age restrictions.
