Club Penguin and Fortnite Veterans Build Imagine Island for Gen Alpha

Magic Potion Games is targeting Generation Alpha with its virtual space, Imagine Island. Founded by a team of industry veterans who originally met while working on Club Penguin—and who have since worked at companies like EA and Epic Games—the studio aims to build safe, online social experiences tailored to younger users. According to Magic Potion Games founder and CEO Stephen MacDonald, the studio features team members with decades of combined experience running kid-safe online environments and working on culturally impactful titles like Fortnite.

The company has raised a Series A funding round backed by investors including Square Enix, 1AM Gaming, 1Up Ventures, Konvoy, and Club Penguin co-founder Lane Merrifield. While the total sum of the funding has not been publicly disclosed, MacDonald noted that the capital will help transition the game into its next growth stage. The beta test for Imagine Island reached over one million players organically without traditional marketing, and the title has earned a nomination for Best Web Game of the Year in the Pocket Gamer Awards 2026.

Built as a browser game to eliminate download and installation friction for families, Imagine Island is also scheduled to receive a mobile app version in the near future. Later this year, Magic Potion Games intends to roll out new gameplay experiences, creator tools, and partnerships bringing major children's franchises to the platform. Additionally, the team plans to introduce a parent-friendly membership model that avoids aggressive monetization strategies.

Addressing how the platform stands out in a crowded market that includes giants like Roblox, MacDonald emphasized that the core philosophy draws on the timeless DNA of Club Penguin—such as roleplaying, goofy stories, simple minigames, and kindness—while adapting to how Generation Alpha plays. Unlike older Flash-era virtual worlds, today's younger players expect creation, customization, and user-generated content features that keep the virtual world constantly changing.
