Bruce Straley, the co-director of The Last of Us and Uncharted franchises at Naughty Dog, has apologized to Santa Monica Studio after singling out God of War: Laufey in criticism of triple-A game innovation.

In an Edge Magazine interview, Straley praised Laufey's visual craftsmanship but expressed disappointment with its gameplay direction. "Every pixel is mindblowing," he said. "The amount of work and skill that's gone into every single frame… I've made those kinds of games, and I'm still blown away. But when I actually look at what you're doing in the game? I'm not excited."

Straley expanded his remarks to address the broader AAA landscape, stating "across the board in triple-A, it feels like there's no opportunity to inject fresh, innovative ideas."

On September 18, 2026, Straley posted an apology on X, acknowledging the mistake. "I want to apologize to the Laufey team for dragging you all into this uninvited and unnecessary negative attention," he wrote. "I was trying to illustrate an industry concern and my mistake of naming your game is being used out of context and for clickbait. You don't need this. I'm sorry."

Rather than retract his broader point, Straley clarified what he believes is actually damaging AAA development. He directed criticism at industry leaders pursuing games-as-a-service models inspired by Overwatch, Fortnite, and Roblox. "The quest for GaaS and wanting to recreate the next Overwatch, Fortnite, Roblox, etc is not a viable strategy and frankly shows these 'industry leaders' don't know their own brand," he said.

Straley attributed the problem to leadership failure rather than developer talent. "There's a lack of good leadership, clear direction, and conviction from the people at the top, in charge of the money," he explained. "I believe if they understand their brand, they could have honest, inspiring conversations with creators to steer our medium to innovate."

He pointed to games like Half-Life 2, Gears of War, and BioShock, along with his own work on Uncharted 2 and The Last of Us, as examples that "set the modern AAA mold" by attempting "to create a new experience within AAA."

Straley left Naughty Dog in 2017 and founded indie studio Wildflower Interactive in 2021. The studio is currently developing Coven of the Chickenfoot, a puzzle-platformer where players guide an elderly witch named Gertie alongside a creature-companion she cannot communicate with directly.
