The commercial success of the poker-based deck-building game Balatro has directly helped its publisher, PlayStack, fund a wider variety of independent projects. Released in 2024, Balatro combined roguelite elements with traditional card mechanics to become a massive award-winning hit.

In an interview with Christopher Dring of The Game Business, PlayStack CEO Harvey Elliott explained that the deck-builder's success provided the company with validation and new financial confidence. Elliott stated that PlayStack has no intention of becoming a single-genre publisher or a gigantic corporation that floods the market with releases every single week. Instead, the company plans to maintain a varied slate, aiming for around eight releases a year to keep operations busy and healthy.

Elliott also addressed the company's approach to project selection, noting that achieving a perfect hit rate would indicate that the publisher is avoiding creative risks. According to Elliott, independent publishing and development thrive on unconventional ideas that might initially seem difficult to visualize. He suggested that an 85 percent or even 70 percent success rate is preferable because aiming for 100 percent would mean missing out on worthwhile creative gambles.

In May, the Integrated Media Company acquired PlayStack for £125 million. Elliott expressed enthusiasm that this new ownership structure will provide the publisher with enhanced opportunities to take bold risks on future indie titles.
