The Simpsons: Hit & Run Is ‘Coming Back In Some Form,’ Says Matt Groening

Fans of the classic open-world driving and adventure game The Simpsons: Hit & Run may finally have something to look forward to. According to series creator Matt Groening, the beloved title is “coming back in some form.” The hint was dropped over the weekend during a panel for the franchise at the D23 event in California.

During the panel, the creators were asked about a possible second Hit & Run game following the recent news that a second The Simpsons movie is in the pipeline. Showrunner Matt Selman initially responded to the inquiry by calling a sequel “a treat.” Groening then followed up with his comment regarding the original game's potential return, which prompted Selman to jokingly interject with “Or…not.” Trying to steer the conversation away from the topic, Groening diverted into reminiscing about the release of The Simpsons: Road Rage and the naming hurdles they faced before the launch of Hit & Run.

Originally developed by Radical Entertainment and released for the PS2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC in 2003, The Simpsons: Hit & Run became a massive fan-favorite. The game follows the titular family and Apu as they uncover an alien conspiracy orchestrated by Kang and Kodos across Springfield. Blending on-foot combat and driving elements inspired heavily by the Grand Theft Auto series, the sandbox title sold over three million copies worldwide by June 2007. Recently, it was also announced that the original developer Radical Entertainment has returned as New Radical Games, combining the original studio with Hothead Games.
